One of the most popular and common tattoos today is a design featuring phrases or words that represent something or someone special.
And that always raises the question: “what kind of lettering should I use for my tattoo?” That’s why we’ve put together the 7 most recommended fonts for your design, so that choosing tattoo lettering becomes a much easier task for both you and your tattoo artist.
The 7 best fonts for tattoos.
- Adelia
An elegant, modern calligraphic font. Its slight slant and flowing curves convey romance and sophistication.
You can use it for romantic phrases, names or delicate tattoos.
- Ancient
A Gothic font with angular shapes, ornate serifs and a strong visual presence.
Ancient is the ideal choice if you want to tattoo powerful words and you like large designs.
- Courier New
It looks like typewriter type, with every letter taking up exactly the same width.
Conveying simplicity, minimalism and nostalgia, this lettering is perfect for dates, coordinates and vintage-style tattoos.
- Didot
The font reminiscent of fashion and luxury magazines: a high-contrast serif with very fine lines and elegant finishing strokes.
Perfect for tattooing a word, a quote or a phrase, as it conveys luxury, sophistication and exclusivity.
- Santa Catalina
Dynamic, with a certain natural irregularity that gives it a spontaneous, lively touch. It’s a font that conveys freedom, warmth and naturalness.
Use it for names and inspirational phrases to give them a more authentic touch.
- Typewriter
Inspired by old typewriters, it features slightly imperfect characters and an easily recognisable vintage look.
Perfect for nostalgic and memorial tattoos thanks to its authentic style and personality.
- Times New Roman
A classic, balanced serif font with traditional proportions, excellent legibility and a serious, timeless look.
Because it conveys seriousness and stability, it’s perfect for tattooing long phrases or literary quotes.
If you still haven’t found the ideal font for your tattoo, you can also look for inspiration on sites like Google Fonts or ask your tattoo artist for advice.
Handwriting lettering: a loved one’s handwriting.
If you want a truly meaningful, unique tattoo and to carry that person with you always, tattooing their own handwriting can be one of the most special lettering options.
While trends come and go and styles fall out of fashion, the sentimental value of tattoo lettering in a loved one’s handwriting will never fade.
Many people choose phrases such as “I love you”, signatures, or phrases and words that remind them of that special person.
Tips for tattooing words.
To make sure your tattoo still looks good and stays legible years later, there are several things to bear in mind that will make the result as professional as possible:
- Choose a legible font so that it can still be read as the tattoo ages. Simple, balanced fonts with space between the letters age much better.
- Leave enough space between letters. Otherwise, the letters could spread, end up merging and lose definition.
- Adapt the size of your design so your tattoo is easier to read and keeps its detail.
- Choose the right area of the body for your tattoo. On areas such as the chest, forearm, collarbone, ribs and upper back, lettering works especially well, as the skin holds definition and legibility better.
- Choose a font that matches the meaning of the tattoo. As you’ve seen, each tattoo font conveys something different.
- Check the spelling of the design before getting tattooed. Spelling mistakes are more common than you’d think, and nobody wants one tattooed forever.
The best way to make sure your tattoo turns out well and stays that way over the years is to follow your tattoo artist’s advice.
